"Of all the Italian hill towns, Civita di Bagnoregio is my favorite." By Rick Steves
The town is known for its position atop a plateau of friable volcanic tuff overlooking the Tiber river valley. It is in constant danger of destruction as the edges of the plateau collapse due to erosion for that reason it is also known as "la città morta". The city is also much admired for its architecture spanning several hundred years.
